About the Event
Tobacco use is the number one cause of preventable death and disease in New York City.
Tobacco use results in an estimated 12,000 deaths from all types of disease of New Yorkers annually. [i] Menthol cigarettes are the most popular type of cigarette with surveys showing that half of youth (ages 12- 17) who had ever tried smoking initiated with menthol cigarettes,[ii] and 42.3% of high school students who smoke reported using menthol cigarettes in 2023.[iii]. Nearly 9 in ten African-Americans who smoke use menthol cigarettes. [iv) That is no coincidence.
Come join the discussion surrounding Big Tobacco's 50+ year campaign targeting black and brown communities to get them hooked on menthol cigarettes. The forum will feature a viewing of the critically acclaimed short film 'Black Lives Black Lungs' with a community discussion around the impact smoking can have on one's health to follow. We will discuss the need to end the sale of menthol cigarettes, and the role city and state leaders can play to address systemic racism in the enforcement of commercial tobacco laws.
